The association behind Folkemødet, Foreningen Folkemødet, has developed a strategy for creating a more sustainable festival. The strategy identifies the areas the association will be focusing on for the coming festivals.
Read about the different projects below:
We are working to reduce waste and increase recycling, aiming for 0% non-recycled waste. As part of this strategy we're introducing recycling stations across the festival in 2021, where organizers must sort and dispose of their waste.
We aim to reduce and eventually ban all disposable plastic at Folkemødet. Projects furthering this goal includes banning disposable plastic in handouts and introducing washable reusable cups in partnership with the Danish brewery Tuborg.
While fighting disposable plastic we're also reducing the amount of waste produced at Folkemødet.
We want more local, organic and climate-friendly food at Folkemødet. As such, food trucks, pop-up restaurants etc. must have at least 80% organic and 40% local produce. They must have at least one vegan item on the menu.
While fighting waste in general, we also aim to reduce and eventually prevent food waste. By redistributing leftovers in association with the local branch of Stop Spild af Mad ("stop food waste") and using food waste as a ressource we aspire to achieve this goal.
We seek to decrease our carbon footprint by buying energy from renewal resources and banning generators at the festival. As such, all organizers must use our network of electricity, rather than using generators.
We aim to make traveling to and from Folkemødet as climate-friendly as possible. To that end, we've partnered up with several organizations to create "the Climate Journey". The purpose of the Climate Journey to Folkemødet is to demonstrate the present and future green transport choices by giving Folkemødet participants a concrete opportunity to transport themselves in a climate-friendly fashion to Bornholm during Folkemødet.
Change starts with yourself. In the day-to-day operations of our Secretariat, we're minimizing and sorting our waste, banning all disposable plastic and having an eco-friendly lunch. We are always developing and implementing further change towards a sustainable future.
We aim to make Folkemødet a platform for innovation. As such we are teaming up with organizations, students and others to analyze, test and develop new climate-friendly ideas and solutions, before, during and after the festival.
